SLU-PP-332, a synthetic compound marketed as a 'metabolic accelerator,' is available online with prices ranging from 70 to 300 euros depending on the bottle's milligram content. The promises associated with this product are highly enticing: it claims to aid in weight loss, burn fat, increase muscle mass, and, most notably, mimic the benefits of physical exercise. These claims are based on a study published last October, which demonstrated the compound's effectiveness in mice.
Although the study was conducted on mice, the idea of a pill that allows people to avoid the gym is as extraordinarily appealing as a drug that lets us eat anything without gaining weight (despite the health consequences of what we eat, but that's another story).
As with everything, there are multiple nuances to this topic. Obviously, no one misses the point that this 'miracle' pill, like Ozempic and similar drugs, would have extraordinary value for specific populations with special needs (physical limitations, severe injuries, heart insufficiencies, etc.).
However, trying to remedy our lack of physical activity with a pill, just as we do with our sleep deficiencies and dietary gaps, says a lot about the path we are taking as a society.
It indicates that we are messing up (the more accurate term would be a bit cruder) with something that should be ingrained in us from a young age: adopting healthy habits.
Just as we are taught from childhood to brush our teeth after every meal, to shower, or to wash our hands when we come back from the street, physical activity should be part of our daily hygiene (both physical and mental) routines.
Instead of being treated as a 'side subject' to be cut in favor of other matters, Physical Education should be a core subject taught daily, as knowing, caring for, and enhancing our bodies according to their needs is something we all need to understand, regardless of our professions as adults. Moreover, it is well documented that exercise improves academic performance by enhancing concentration and mental clarity.
It also tells us a lot about the persistent myths surrounding physical activity. Myths like "exercise is tiring," "you sweat during exercise," "exercise is boring," or "exercise is something you have to do because there's no other choice and it's dreadful."
Beyond the 'epic' and effort that each person wants to put into their physical activity, exercising does not always have to be a heroic act where we push ourselves to the limit in search of an 'impossible is nothing' achievement. It’s not necessary to complete an Ironman, run a sub-40-minute 10k, do 1,000 sit-ups every morning, lift weights until our biceps tear, or leave every session exhausted. Moreover, running is not the only option to stay fit. Everyone is free to choose the activity that best suits their needs or interests.
Exercise, at least from a health perspective, is a breath of fresh air for the body, mind, and soul. It means dedicating half an hour, 45 minutes, or however long we have to taking care of ourselves. It means reserving a fixed time in our schedule to pamper our muscles and joints. It also means listening to our favorite music or chatting with gym buddies about anything and everything. Sports are also a social activity that comforts us, helps us escape, release stress, and face what comes next, pumped up with endorphins.
Because the real magic pill is not SLU-PP-332, but exercise. And the day we internalize that, we will be much better off.
